Late Night Political Humor

"President-elect Barack Obama had lunch at the White House with all the living U.S. presidents. Obama called the meeting "an extraordinary gathering." In a related story, John McCain had lunch at Quiznos." ---Conan O'Brien -
"First lady Laura Bush is writing a memoir. I’m gonna buy it. I think it’s called, I’m With Stupid." ---David Letterman -
"Actually, it looks like Roland Burris will get his Senate seat, but Senate leaders said not until his certificate is signed by the Illinois secretary of state. They say this has been the rule since 1884. They've never, ever wavered from this. Of course, over the past eight years, they've waived rules against, y'know, torture and spying on Americans and violating the Constitution, but never the little signature." ---Jay Leno
- Joe the Plumber is now a war correspondent for Pajamas Media. Is that a news story or a mad lib? ---Jon Stewart

If I wanted to order some tiger penis, can I order that here? Stephen Colbert: It was all part of CNN's investigative report: Penis in Peril. ---The Colbert Report

Taking Out the Trash

Change is coming and I’m not talking about our new president. I’m talking about my new trash hauler. We were just notified that our subdivision would be switching as of the first of February.
Some people are excited about changes in their trash collection, but don’t count me as one. I’m just glad it gets done. This is one more thing that separates this great nation from so many others. We have our trash removed in an orderly fashion. It’s great. Every week, I put my can out near the street and magically the contents are removed while I’m away at work.
I guess the reason I feel this way it’s never been my responsibility. I grew up in Crestwood. The city took care of it with a lot of help from the customers of their mall. From there, I moved to the city (St. Louis). Again, the city took care of it. During my military years, I never knew who hauled away my trash. I was just glad nobody told me to jump on a trash truck and start picking up cans. I bought a home in St. George and the city took care of it. I purchased my current home in South County about sixteen years ago. Guess what, the subdivision took care of it.
Apparently, after not first jumping on the county bandwagon, my subdivision has decided this year to join with the new trash district.
My trash is going to continue to be picked up and it’s going to cost me less money. That’s a great start to my new year. I hope it’s a prosperous one for all of you.

If a Loser Whines in a Forrest.....

Sunday Morning Roundup
by: --Blue Girl
Sun Jan 04, 2009 at 10:04:28 AM CST
In the words of the preznit, "So what?" Frankly, anything that makes John Hancock swallow his tongue has already cleared a pretty high bar. What has him apoplectic this time, you ask? This morning he is breathless over the fact that Jay Nixon's campaign received contributions from interest groups that traditionally support Democratic candidates! And they were able to contribute more than $1350 because republicans removed the contribution caps. John, take a Valium or something, and get back to me when you have something. Lotta damn gall getting indignant about legal contributions to an incoming Democrat who was elected in a landslide, while the outgoing republican executive still has some questions hanging over his head about Abramoff and DeLay. Jay Nixon has been the Attorney General for sixteen years, and the worst they have come up with to throw at him was a few years ago when Peter Slocum had his knickers in a twist because Mr. Nixon was driving his state car home for lunch. No indictments flowed from that particular crime spree.

The History of the Red Kettle

In 1891, a Salvation Army captain in an Fransisco resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner to the area's poor.
From his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, the captain remembered a large pot, displayed on the Stage Landing, called" Simpson's Pot," where passerby would toss charitable donations. The captain presented his idea to the city authorities and received permission to place a similar pot at the Oakland ferry landing at the foot of San Fransisco's Market Place. In its conspicuous position, the pot drew the attention of people going to and from the ferry boats. Another urn, in the ferryboat waiting room, also attracted donations. Thus, Captain Joseph McFee launched a tradition that spread throughout the United States and then the world.
By Christmas 1895, thirty Salvation Army corps in the West Coast area used the kettle. That year, The Sacramento Bee published a description of the Army's Christmas activities and mentioned the contributions. Two young Salvation Army officers, William A. McIntyre and N.J. Lewis, instrumental in the original use of the kettle, took the idea to the East Coast. In 1897, McIntyre prepared his Christmas plans for Boston around the kettle.
Other Army officers did not want to participate for fear of " making spectacles of themselves."
Nevertheless, McIntyre, with his wife and sister set up three kettles on Washington Street in the heart of the city. That year the kettle effort in Boston and other locations nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy.
In 1898, the New York World hailed the Salvation Army kettles as "the newest and most novel device for collecting money. The newspaper also observed, "There is a man in charge to see that contributions are not stolen."
In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today, families are often given grocery checks or food baskets so they can prepare dinner at home. The homeless poor are still invited to share holiday dinners and festivities at hundreds of Salvation Army centers.
Kettles now are used around the world, including Korea, Japan, Chile and Europe.

A Reply From the Mehlville Fire Department

Mr. Heins:
Please note that Chief Silvernail receives a salary of $100,000.00 per year. At one point, I believe the Chief turned down a raise, but the contract inaccurately reflected the proposed salary rather than the actual salary of $100,000.00 per year. I apologize for the confusion.
