Letter to the St. Louis Post Dispatch Editor

The article “A to-do list for legislators” offered opinions on state funding for the St. Louis Public Schools and the State of Missouri.
The authors share their conclusions but offered zero facts from which they were based. The article suggested the funding formula be changed because the city schools (according to them) were not using their money effectively. The State of Missouri took over the city school district several years ago. If there is something wrong with the district, it’s the state’s fault. That’s not a good reason to change policy for the other 523 school districts.
The Missouri K-12 budget is short some 500 million dollars. To suggest that the legislature give out tax credits worsens the problem.
Perhaps since these doctoral fellows are working from Arkansas, they aren’t familiar with public education in the state of Missouri and have no idea about what’s going with the St. Louis Public Schools. But likely they do. We know the authors are KIPP school promoters. KIPP, like Imagine, is a corporate school operator. Like any business, they are motivated by profits. They make promises and take over schools. They selectively weed out the underperforming kids and your left with the same problems and a lot less money.
The legislature must deal with the state’s education funding formula. They also have a challenge dealing with the St. Louis Public School District since they took it over. These simple solutions offered by those with corporate agendas will only help their shareholders.

Imagine Schools are producing some of the worst prepared students I have ever seen in my multiple years in education. 6th grade students who can't add, 4th grade students who only know 10 letters, and can't read words. In fact, I've heard that the state has requested the closing of all Imagine Schools. That is how bad they are.
When we get schools for profit, then we lose the basic tenet of education in America--that education is a right, not a privelege, and that every student has an opportunity to learn.

Mike you are right on and I agree with the article. I think our schools look very good in South County.

I know this is not related to this story however I thought this was worth commenting on. Assistant Chief Mark Emart of the Affton Fire Protection District was just appointed to the position of Fire Chief in the Collinsville ILL Fire Department. This is the same person that Stonebraker went after his job do to his out spoken remarks on Mehlville Fire Protection District Chief Tim White. I feel Mark was very correct on his statements. The South County area should be very proud of his appointment and I know the Citizens of the Affton Fire Protection District will miss him.

As a resident of the South County area I am very proud. It sure is funny but all the comments he made about White turned out to be true.

6:32am not only were the comments true but many individuals in the community already knew what this very unprofessional chief was like. Also everyone was aware that he was a mouth piece for Stonebraker who had an axe to grind with many good people that were employed by the Mehlville Fire Protection District.

So why is not the Call News doing stories on Brian Hendricks like they did for Tim White. I will tell you why. Tim White was Jim Stonebrakers boy and when he got the axe Stonebraker and the Call were not happy camplers. On the other hand Brian Dendricks was not there pick so lets not give him any credit. MAKES SENCE DON'T IT.

8:38 PM you might want to use spell check? However I do agree that Stonebraker's boy went down for being a jerk and Hendrick took his place which was not to popular for Stonebraker or the Call. Stonebraker really know how to pick them. LOL
