I was reading the south county truth blog but there's nowhere to post questions. I found this site also through google.

Why is the Mehlville Fire Department board trying to run two election issues to reduce taxes? I thought they could set the tax rate to whatever they wanted as long as it was under the amount approved by the voters? I would think it costs more taxpayer money to run an election than it would to just set the rate lower. What's the good in having an election for it?

They are doing it because they are tax-phobes, which is just as dangerous as being tax-aholics. You are right, 4:09, they can set the rate as low as they choose, but that is not good enough for their politically driven goals. They are trying to handcuff future boards. This is an ill-advised strategy as it leaves no manuevering room if budget plans explode due to some unforeseen catastrophe. Hilmer would like nothing better than to see this fire district fold and be absorbed by another district or taken over by state regulating authorities.
Voters are idiots if they can't see the irresponsiblity of this BOD's actions. They are busily flushing a first class fire department down the drain. At this point, it is a nearly accomplished mission for Hilmer and his cronies.
For those of us who have lived here and built this department, it is a flushed investment.

I see the 'Truthspot' is spreading there anti-firefighter/anti-union message as usual!
When the elections come around they will see that the 3% of the registered voters will show thet they are sick and tired of the way they spread hate through the ranks of the fire department!
Whats more there negative attitude toward the real 'Heros' that serve and protect us will surely bring out more voters to elect the puppet of Hilmer named Stegman out of the spot she holds!
Can't wait for April to roll around!

I think the Board is doing the right thing. Someone has to keep the taxes under control.

You are absolutely correct!
This current fire board realizes they won’t be able to keep themselves as board members forever!
So, their only hope is to tie the hands of a newly elected board which could possibly replace them. This is their way of rule from the outside.
They don't like it, but this is a free democratic society they live in, which threatens them! If they were doing a great job they would continue to be re-elected forever and continue setting the tax rate to what they saw fit. It doesn’t sound like they trust the public’s opinion of which it votes, does it?

Refresh my memory, didn't they try to take some action last year to reduce taxes and a judge said they couldn't.

I do think they are setting the tax rates to what they see fit. Just look new firehouses are going up and new fire equipment purchased AND NO TAX INCREASES. The current board is doing a great job and should be retained for as long as they want to serve.

The board is doing a good job at keeping taxes under control. I just don't understand why we are paying for an election to do what they are already doing.

The board is for sure trying to tie the hands of the money being spent in the future. The problem is this year and for the last 3 years, since the new board has been in charge, they had to borrow money from the savings account at the proposed tax rate they are trying to pass in April. This savings account, I'm sure, has got to have quite a bit of money in it for the board to borrow as much money as they have been doing. Since the board is running at the proposed tax rate that they are trying to pass in April,(64 cents I think) then how do you expect the now board or the future board to run without running into the red? Thank goodness there is the savings account or else? This saving account mind you has been there for many many years, gaining interest.

The board is doing a great job, not stealing like the rest of the boards and of course some of the employees who who only care about self serving motives.

The current board isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. They are just spending the savings account and making it look like they are doing a great job. If it wasn't for the savings we wouldn't be getting the new house or the new equipment or anything. Besides a lot of these items were already in the 5 year plan established before Himler and Steggman. It is just coincidence they are sitting in office at the this time.
